Ninety-five Oregon artists submit a record 175 art pieces for December’s Something Red Art Walk
Original art, all featuring the color red, will delight downtown patrons as part of the 10th annual Something Red Art Walk Event in Salem. Media includes paintings in oils, acrylics and watercolor, mixed media, pastel, photography, ceramic, wood, fiber, and textiles. Styles range from classic to contemporary to edgy, from both emerging to professional fine artists.
The event opens with the Art Walk on First Wednesday, December 5, from 5 -7 p.m. Twenty-one merchants will display the art pieces, all of which are available for purchase. Art Walk Maps are available at Travel Salem, participating merchant locations, or online at http://www.somethingred.org/art-walk-map/.
From 7 – 8 p.m. the public is invited to attend the Artists’ Awards Reception at 365 Ferry St., across from the Salem Conference Center. Awards will be given in these categories: Best of Show, First, Second and Third Place, Best Use of Red, and Honorable Mentions. Art is juried this year by: Ruth Armitage, a Signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the Northwest Watercolor Society, and Joel Zak, a local professional photographer. Salem’s Mayor, Anna Peterson, will bestow the “Mayor’s Award” to the creator of her favorite art piece.
The reception offers light refreshments, and music by international touring and recording artist and master of the twenty-string harp guitar, John Doan. And for more fun, donations to benefit the Marion County Food Share will be accepted via “Food by the Foot” artist, Sandi Allen, who will be crocheting at the reception.
This year, a “Red Ticket” art raffle allows patrons to win an original work of art valued at $300. The winner will be drawn during the reception, but need not be present to win. Winner may choose from 7 art pieces available and on display at the 365 Ferry Street location. Winner may choose art during the reception or the following Saturday, December 8th.
Tickets are $10 each, and are available at Red Raven Gallery and The Art Department, or at 365 Ferry St. on Saturday, December 1st, 11am to 4pm.
In addition to the Art Walk, every Saturday in December Artists in Action members have art on display and live art demonstrations of various techniques and media at the AiA Studio Space - 365 Ferry Street, Salem - from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to watch artists as they work on projects, view art demonstrations, and speak with artists as they create.
